Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is a type of surgery that is used to treat the problems like cancer, tumors, blockage, etc occurring in the large intestine. The goal of this surgery is to remove the problematic part of the large intestine and then connect the remaining healthy and properly functioning parts together. A laparoscopy is a surgical approach that the surgeon may choose, to do the operation.
In the long term, the laparoscopic approach is as beneficial as the open surgery approach but in many cases, the laparoscopic approach is still more advantageous because it has more short-term benefits. The short-term benefits of the laparoscopic approach are mentioned below-
Dr. Vinay Samuel Gaikwad is a talented cancer surgeon who has logged a significant amount of Laparoscopic colorectal surgery experience. He has over two decades of experience working in clinical settings and has been associated with some of India’s most prestigious hospitals in the past. He is the most suitable candidate for the laparoscopic colorectal surgery .
Because laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure and the surgeon has to work with a small buttonhole, the risk of it is directly related to the experience and surgery skill-mastery of the surgeon.
Laparoscopy requires a highly trained surgeon. Some common risks of laparoscopic surgery if done by an improperly trained surgeon are as follows-
If the surgeon is not trained properly then the risk sometimes may also be death.
But if the surgeon is completely trained and well experienced, then maybe none of the risks mentioned above can cause you any trouble.
It is just like, the more skilled the surgeon, the safer the surgery.
To prepare for the Laparoscopic colorectal surgery , do as your surgeon says. Stay calm and communicate if you feel nervous. Bring something to read, that will prevent you from getting bored or stressed and help the time pass quickly.
Ask out every query with your surgeon if you have any. Do not eat anything after the time that is instructed by your surgeon or you may face the risk of postponing the operation.
Get adequate sleep before the surgery. Have some company of one or maximum of two members among your close ones to the hospital. The surgeon will also take some medical tests to see if you are healthy enough for the surgery. So it is suggested to cooperate with your surgeon for minimal delays in your surgery.
There is nothing much at all to prepare during the Laparoscopic colorectal surgery as you will be unconscious throughout the surgery because of the anesthesia that will be injected into you. A well-experienced and trained team of surgeons and nurses will do your operation, so there is no need to be stressed about any specific thing. Before starting the surgery may take up to four to eight hours. In this method, the surgeon will make small incisions in your lower abdomen to get access to your large intestine or the colon. The surgeon will also insert a camera and other devices as per the need or the complexity of the surgery. So that the surgeon can get complete guidance on every activity happening inside you.
The surgeon will then cut and remove the problematic part of your colon and then reconnect the remaining parts of the large intestine together for the proper functioning of the absorption of water and electrolytes in the digestive processes.
After the operation is done, you will have to stay in the hospital on bed rest, under observation for at least two to three days. During this period, you must consult the surgeon if you experience any kind of internal pain or discomfort occurring within you.
You are suggested to have something to read or do anything you like that doesn’t need any physical movement so that you don’t feel any boredom throughout your observation period. After the discharge from the hospital, you can return to your home for further recovery and can easily be involved in your everyday activities after around four to six weeks after the day of surgery.
After the operation is over, the surgeon will remove all of the equipment, close the incisions with sutures, and cover the area with little bandages. Additionally, the abdomen will have the majority of carbon dioxide removed from it.
After the operation, the patient may need to struggle with bowel dysfunctions for a few days but this is not at all a long-term issue. Colorectal surgery is one of the most effective ways to treat colorectal cancers, tumours, blockages, or any other problems occurring in the large intestine.
